An auto-immune disorder, Coeliac disease is caused by gluten. The disease can cause serious problem if left untreated, as it affects small intestine, which plays an important role in absorbing nutrients. When those affected with coeliac disease eat gluten, there is an inappropriate immune reaction, which causes damage and inflammation of the outer lining of the small intestine. The villi on the outer lining of the small bowel are responsible for absorbing nutrients in food. The damage to the outer lining can lead to nutritional deficiencies. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, oats, barley and rye.

Treatment

Vitamin D deficiency can cause a leaky gut and inflammation of the small intestine. Since coeliac disease is linked with nutritional deficiency, somebody suffering from the disorder desperately needs to increase intake of vitamins and nutrients, especially vitamin D. Vitamin D moderates the immune system and can help in reversing the leaking gut, which is critical for fighting coeliac disease. Please consult your doctor if you suspect you are suffering from coeliac.
