Becoming increasingly known as a herb for men, the saw palmetto plant from South America produces dark red berries that promise relief (and a good sleep) for men who suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Roughly half of all men over 50 are affected by this harmless but irritating condition, which causes the prostate gland to gradually enlarge and squeeze the urethra, causing difficulty in urinating and a more frequent desire to try, especially at night.

Saw palmetto is increasingly suggested by doctors, and is offered as a first-line treatment for BPH in Germany. It acts in a similar way to Finasteride, the most commonly-prescribed drug designed to relieve the symptoms of BPH, yet it seems to have a gentle action with very few side effects other than occasional gastric discomfort.

Published in the National Journal of Andrology 2015, researchers Ju XB et al conducted a study titled ‘Efficacy and safety of Saw Palmetto Extract Capsules in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia’. They conducted a multi-centred open clinical study on 165 BPH patients treated with Saw Palmetto Extract Capsules for 12 weeks. At the beginning of the study, at 6 weeks and 12 weeks after supplementation, they compared the International Prostate Symptom Scores (IPSS), prostate volume, postvoid residual urine volume, urinary flow rate, quality of life scores (QOL), and adverse events between the two groups of patients.

They found that compared to the baseline, both IPSS and QOL were improved after 6 weeks of medication, and by 12 weeks, significant improvement was found in IPSS, QOL, urinary flow rate, and postvoid residual urine. 1 participant experienced mild stomach ache, which required no treatment.

They concluded that Saw Palmetto Extract Capsules were safe and effective for the treatment of BPH.

Published in Urology 2001, Gerber et al conducted a study titled ‘Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of saw palmetto in men with lower urinary tract symptoms’. Eligible patients used were 45 years of age or older and had an International Prostate Symptom Score of 8 or more.

After a 1-month of being given only a placebo, 85 men were randomly chosen to receive saw palmetto or placebo for the next 6 months. Patients were evaluated using the International Prostate Symptom Score, a sexual function questionnaire, and by measurement of the urinary flow rate.

Results showed the average symptom score decreased from 16.7 to 12.3 in the saw palmetto group compared with 15.8 to 13.6 in the placebo group showing saw palmetto significantly helped reduce symptoms of BPH (according to participant’s own experiences). The quality-of-life score also improved in the saw palmetto group.

They concluded that Saw Palmetto led to a statistically significant improvement in urinary symptoms in men with lower urinary tract symptoms compared with placebo.
